Coastal Tropical Garden
Sheltered from prevailing coastal south and westerly winds, this north facing garden is low-maintenance with layered tropical plantings. Main feature trees are Cyathea dealbata (Ponga) with Stag Horn Ferns and Astelia, Meryta sinclairii (Puka), Cordyline australis (Tī Kōuka, Cabbage Tree), Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm). Mid height are Piper excelsum (Kawakawa) colourful Canna Lillies, Bromeliads sp, Tussock Grasses, and a mix of native groundcovers.
Works
A newly built home, the area for garden was mostly sand dune and builders fill. We collected all site refuse, bricks, rocks, and concrete to build small retaining areas to hold compost and aged tree mulch to plant into. Paths and a compost area were added.
